![]() | Mine is the Box Brownie story you’ve heard so often before. I fell in love with the first camera I saw in childhood and never fell out. By my twenties I was working with professional equipment. There followed a period of commercial photography with an emphasis on large-format food and architecture. As I get further into the transition to travel photojournalism, I find my prior commercial/industrial experience proves to be useful. As well as the discipline it fostered, there is the fact that a travel article might involve shooting a table setting and almost always includes some photography of architecture. |
A background in graphic arts has inclined me to look upon photographs intended for publication as part of a whole to which others make significant contributions. As a result, a set of images will generally include a few that leave some “air” for art directors to crop, inset and superimpose according to their own concepts. Timing is important. I like photographs which give an impression that there is something special about the exact moment of exposure as well as the composition, quality of light, and other elements. In
addition to travel, I continue to research and write on other topics and welcome
commercial/editorial assignments in a variety of fields. Don
